VISIONS invites us to a kaleidoscopic game of mirrors where we get a glimpse of Madeleine Spierer´s universe, as well as an invitation to reflect on ourselves and our own imagination.

Her work is wild, intuitive and direct, culminating in a practice spanning more than sixty years. Spierer's (1926–2021) work has always explored the axis between the inner world and the outer world, a liminal space that she has explored since she was 12 years old when she began to draw and paint. Madeleine dares, throughout her career, to explore far beyond what is 'beautiful', what is pleasant, what is comfortable. In her works she explores, through a significant variety of techniques, materials and supports, without limits imposed by the conventional.

She paints with earth, sand, pigments, makes stains, tears paper, prints crookedly, all part of a fidelity to her inner process, materializing it in the world.

Investigating Madeleine's work, we realize a very direct link between what appears outside (the work) and what exists inside (inner world). She has known how, despite everything, to incorporate her artistic impulses with her daily life, and make her art a way of life.

In Galerie Ruine, the best works are returning to Geneva presenting a selection   across disciplines ranging from oil paintings, to drawing and engraving. Very much aware of her ambiguous position in the art world, as an ´outsider´, we are thrilled to honour her legacy with this retrospective exhibition. We get to observe, reflect, peek, and look again, at the evocative oeuvre of Madeleine Spierer.
